편향된 모습이나 혼탁함 벗어나 새 가치 필요한 때
우리나라 근대 정치사에서 개혁을 앞세운 갑신정변의 실패로 온 가족의 생명을 잃고 단신 미국으로 망명한 서재필 박사 (1864-1951)는 다시 고국으로 돌아와 독립신문을 창간하였다(1896).
그가 독립신문을 창간하게 된 이유는 선진국 미국에서의 망명 생활 중 그곳 신문들이 단지 새 소식을 전하는 기능을 넘어 대중들이 사회와 국가에 대해 올바른 인식을 갖추고 정의롭게 나아가야 할 방향에 대해서 교육적 기능과 역할 모두를 수행하는 것을 보았고 그 필요 성을 우리나라에서도 크게 느꼈기 때문이었다.
오늘날 뉴스 매체는 그 어느 때보다 크고 높게 발전하였다. 정보에 접근할 수 있는 방법도 쉽고 다양하다.
그러나 한편 그 편향된 모습이나 혼탁함에 대해서 우려도 금할 수 없는 것이 현실이다. 지정학적인 여건에 묶인 과거 조선 역사는 중국의 영향권은 물론 여타 주변국의 힘의 논리로 점철되어 왔으며 해방과 독립, 대한민국 정부의 수립, 6.25 전쟁의 승리 이후 경제적 도약 등 지금까지 내려오는 일련의 역사를 되돌아 보건대 이 또한 그 범주를 크게 벗어나지 못하고 있음을 본다.
정치, 경제, 군사뿐만 아니라 문화 전반에서도 겪고 있는 현실이다. 특히 음악 분야는 세계 수준에 이른 많은 연주 가들이 있음에도 불구하고 자아 정립에 관해서는 우리가 더 노력하고 발전해야 한다.
《.... 음악을 전공하는 사람들은 재학 시절 어느 전공을 막론하고 음악사라는 과목을 몇 학기에 걸쳐 수강해야 한다. 이는 작곡가 들의 작품 성향에 관한 내용으로 그의 작품이 어떤 특징이 있으며 그 시대를 어떻게 반영했으며 그 후에 어떤 영향을 미쳐 왔는가를 배우는 전공 필수 과목이다. 이는 작곡가의 유일무이한 그만의 높은 정신세계를 배우는 과목으로 음악사에서는 연주가들을 다루거나 논하지 않는다.
나를 표현할 수 있어야 상대 문화 만나고, 그 융합에서 볼꽃이 튀는 창조성 발화
이들 작곡가들의 작품은 자기 자신의 표현이며 동시에 자기 사회, 국가와 민족의 이야기가 스며 있는 이야기를 거쳐 오늘날의 글로벌한 음악이 되었다. 우리 사회는 유난히 외형적인 모습에 비중을 두어왔다. 타문화의 좋은 점을 빨리 그리고 급속히 받아들이면서 그러나 한편 우리의 것을 방기한지 너무 오래다. 우리의 영토, 언어와 음식이 있고 역사와 문화가 있음에도 불구하고 문화적 종속을 가중 시켜왔다.
나를 표현할 수 있어야 다른 문화를 만날 수 있고 그 만남에서의 불꽃이 새 문화를 창출해 왔음을 우리는 세계 예술사에서 보았고 경험하고 있다. 서구 유럽의 음악사에서 작곡가의 기능과 역할이 강조되고 학문적으로 다루는 이유이다.
2022 K-Classic 10주년을 맞이하면서 K-News를 창간함에 대하여 함께 기뻐하며 축하함은 물론 글로벌 세계가 공유하는 예술매체로서 아티스트들의 독립신문이 되기를 기원하는 바이다. 연주가들이 일 구워 놓은 세계무대에 그들이 가지고 나아갈 우리 작품의 개발에 K-News의 선도적 역할 또한 기대한다.

Dr. Suh Jae Pil (1864-1951) was a U. S. citizen and a resident of New York until returning to Korea in 1896 and becoming the founder for the country’s first news paper, Dokrip Shinmun (independence news paper).
He was motivated to go beyond simple listings of events by replicating the cultural, educational, and editorial elements included in the American news papers which he saw as necessary tools for both the pursuit of social justice and attainment of first-world status.
The nation of Korea - historically as well as in current events - often experience political, economic, and military pressures from powerful and larger neighboring nations.
Musically speaking, despite producing numerous (European classical music) performers of international renown, the nation’s relationship with it’s own traditional music is still in need of greater development and promotion.
All music majors at a University are required to enroll in multiple semesters of music history, where the students would learn how a composer’s work reflected it’s historical context, how it responded to it’s contemporary issues, and how it influenced those who followed.
Such classes devote most of it’s topics to composers, rather than performers, reflecting the common tendency to consider the act of composition to be on a higher level when it comes to the artistic potential for expressing not only the visions of the individual, but by going beyond one’s own society, nation, and race, eventually becoming a global music.
Korean society today seems to place outsized emphasis on outwardly appearances, quick - even hasty - to absorb elements it finds attractive from foreign cultures. Yet for too long it tended to overlook it’s own history, music, and cuisine, relegating it’s own culture to a secondary position.
Surely, being secure in one’s own identity and expressions is a necessary quality that can facilitate deeper appreciation of the cultures of others, and a catalyst for sparking greater collaborations leading to new cultural frontiers. Perhaps the reason why scholars in European music history tends to emphasize the role of the composer as foundational.
In congratulating the 10th anniversaries of K-Classic and lauching of K-News in 2021, we celebrate the overdue creation of a dedicated arts & music focused news source. It is my wish that it becomes the Dokrip Shinmun for the artists. May it also spearhead an advocacy for Korean compositions in the global stage, building upon the international foundations already laid by Korean performers.
