우리 가슴 속에 살아 있는 아랑의 이야기
밀양의 대표 캐릭터가 무엇일까. 곰곰이 생각해 보니 결국 두 개였다. 아리랑, 그리고 아랑이다.아시다시피 아랑은 부당한 권력의 청을 거부하다 죽임을 당한 인물이다. 그녀는 억울한 원(怨)을 품고 이 땅을 떠돌고 있다.
그렇다면 우리는 묻지 않을 수 없다. 그 원은 어떻게 풀어야 하는가. 나는 그 답이 아리랑이라고 생각한다. 지금껏 누구도 아랑과 아리랑을 본격적으로 연결시키지 못했다. 그러나 아랑의 한을 풀어낼 수 있는 것은 결국 노래, 그 중에서도 가장 한국적인 정서의 노래인 아리랑이다.
그래서 나는 ‘날 좀 보소’라는 밀양 아리랑의 핵심 키워드를 붙잡았다. 그리고 그 위에 ‘아랑 아리랑’이라는 새로운 서사를 얹었다. 이 아리랑은 흥겨운 노래만은 아니다. 아랑이 다시 살아 돌아와, 오리지널 아랑의 후예인 오늘의 젊은이들— 생존의 출구가 막힌 청춘들, 그리고 전쟁터로 떠난 님의 귀향을 기다리는 이들의 염원을 아라리 선율에 담아내고자 했다.
지금은 상실의 시대
고통과 눈물, 이별이 일상이 된 시대. 그러나 아리랑은 언제나 그 원을 풀어내는 힘을 지녀왔다. 나는 그 믿음 위에 새로운 선율을 입혔다.
만약 BTS의 아리랑이 강렬한 에너지와 퍼포먼스라면, ‘아랑 아리랑’은 보다 단순한 구조 속에서 가슴 깊이 스며드는 붙임성과 호소력을 지닌 노래가 되기를 바란다. 우리는 물론, 세계인이 함께 불러야 할 한글의 노래이기 때문이다.
AI가 이 내면의 감정까지 읽어내어, 더욱 깊은 울림으로 전달되기를 기대한다. 아랑은 태어나고, 원을 품고 떠났으며, 이제 처음으로 ‘아리랑’이라는 옷을 입고 세계로 향하는 여정을 시작한다. 그렇다면 우리는 그 무서운 밤을 이제 놓아주어도 좋지 않을까. 이 노래가 모두가 함께 부르는 떼창의 아리랑, 새로운 시대의 아리랑, 곧 ‘아랑 아리랑’이 되기를 바란다. 이 스토리텔링이야말로 향토지식재산을 깨우는 첫걸음이기 때문이다.
A Writer’s Note on “Arang Arirang”
What represents Miryang?
After deep reflection, I realized there are ultimately two:
Arirang—and Arang.
As is well known, Arang was a young woman who was killed for refusing the unjust demands of a corrupt magistrate.
She left this world carrying a deep and unresolved grievance, wandering in sorrow.
Then we must ask:
How can that grievance be released?
I believe the answer is Arirang.
Until now, no one has fully or meaningfully connected Arang and Arirang.
Yet what can release Arang’s deep sorrow is, in the end, song—
and among all songs, Arirang is the one that holds the most essential Korean emotion.
This is why I held onto the key phrase of Miryang Arirang,
“Look at me, please” (“Nal jom boso”),
and built upon it a new narrative: Arang Arirang.
This Arirang is not merely cheerful or festive.
It is a song in which Arang returns to life,
and through her voice, we hear the stories of today’s youth—
young people whose paths are blocked,
and those who long for the return of loved ones sent away to war.
We are living in an age of loss—
an era where pain, tears, and separation have become part of daily life.
Yet Arirang has always held the power to release sorrow and resentment.
With that faith, I have given it a new musical form.
If the Arirang of BTS is defined by powerful energy and performance,
then Arang Arirang seeks something different—
a simple structure, yet a song that gently and deeply resonates in the heart.
This is a Korean song meant not only for us,
but for people around the world to sing together.
I hope that AI, too, can grasp these inner emotions
and convey them with even greater depth and resonance.
Arang was born,
she carried her sorrow,
and now, for the first time, she puts on the garment of Arirang
and begins her journey toward the world.
And perhaps now,
we can finally let go of that fearful night.
May this song become
an Arirang that everyone sings together—
a new Arirang for a new era:
Arang Arirang.
The story of Arang lives on within our hearts.
And through this storytelling,
we take the first step toward awakening our local cultural heritage
as a living and global narrative.
